To the Glory of God and the recreation of the mind
Johann Sebastian Bach
As a school which seeks to offer music for all, whilst recognising the potential of this art form to develop a child both personally and intellectually, we could hardly do better than to strive as best we can for this Baroque idealism.
Music making permeates most aspects of life at Barrow Hills, from the earliest days of Kindy, when the children learn simple songs and play percussion instruments, through to Year 8 where the children study the musical elements of improvisation and melodic composition.
A number of our children undertake external examinations and their successes are celebrated with the whole school community. Specialist instrumental tuition is offered across a broad spectrum from Year 2 upwards.
Twice a week the school community gathers formally in chapel for assemblies. On these occasions the advanced musicians in Upper Prep have the opportunity to showcase their performances in anticipation of Associated Board music examinations or scholarship auditions. Musical theatre is a very important part of life at Barrow Hills. Each year group in Junior and Upper Prep performs an annual musical, and Pre-Prep stages a production at the end of each term.
Other musical highlights for the pupils and for the whole school community include our carol services, the House singing competition and the annual 'Proms in the Park'.
