Dear Parents

Form 3R took assembly this morning on the theme of self-esteem.  They gave us a very important message; that we should try not to compare ourselves with others and try not to focus on what we can’t do.  Instead we should concentrate on what we can do because if we think positively we will achieve much more.  They included a great quotation from Albert Einstein: ‘Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.’   Thank you 3R

Last Friday we were blessed with beautiful weather for our Year 2 football tournament.  We hosted eight schools and over 100 children, girls and boys.  Thank you to the sports department for giving our children and the children from the other schools this opportunity.  We have a similar event on Monday 27th November with over 170 children coming to run in our cross-country race.

Next week is ‘Be Scholarly’ week.  With tests and examinations over, we will be helping the children to identify what they did well and where they can improve.  We will be encouraging them to reflect, to be resilient and to be curious.  To encourage curiosity we are setting the children the challenge to formulate questions about pictures which will be displayed around the school.

I leave you with a second quotation from this morning’s assembly: ‘Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.’ - Oscar Wilde.

With best wishes,

Jesus told this parable to his disciples: “Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.  Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones took their lamps, but they brought no oil for the lamps.  The sensible ones took their lamps and flasks of oil for their lamps.  The bridegroom was late, and they all grew tired and fell asleep.  But at midnight there was a cry, “The bridegroom is here!  Go out to meet him.”  At this, all the bridesmaids woke up and prepared their lamps.  The foolish bridesmaids had no oil for their lamps and asked the sensible bridesmaids for some of their oil.  But they replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves.”  They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived.  Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding hall and the doors were closed behind them.  By the time foolish bridesmaids arrived, the doors were shut and they were too late to get in.  Jesus said, “stay awake, because you know neither the day nor the hour.”  Matt 25:1-13

The sensible bridesmaids were ready; the foolish ones were not.  The sensible bridesmaids enjoyed the wedding feast, the foolish ones did not.  This story is about being ready and about being prepared.  Hopefully you are all ready and prepared for your exams.  This story is about being ready and prepared for something much more important!  It is about being ready for Jesus; ready to welcome him at any moment of the day or night.  It is about not missing any opportunities or chances to become more ready.  What makes us ready and what makes us unprepared for Jesus?  There are lots of things which make us unprepared for Jesus: if we have had a quarrel with someone and have not made it up with them, we are not prepared; if we have told a lie and not admitted to it, we are not prepared; if we have hurt someone and not apologised to them, we are not prepared; if we fail to say our prayers we are not prepared; if we harbour resentments we are not prepared.  There are a thousand things which cause us to be not prepared and in danger of being shut out of Jesus’ celebrations.  What makes us ready and prepared for Jesus?  It is simple.  It is crazily and blindingly simple!  What makes is ready is to love God and to love others.  That’s it.  Every single day we are given opportunities to make ourselves ready for Jesus, opportunities we must take seriously because, as Jesus points out, we know neither the day nor the hour when Jesus, like the bridegroom, will come.

We must pray for those who are corrupt.  Corruption is like a prison.  That is why we pray for those who are corrupt, so that they can find a way out of the prison.
