Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is defined by the Catholic ethos to education - to educate the whole child and celebrate their success in the school community. This forms the basis of our mission statement.

Sometimes schools seek to discover from parents whether they place more importance on their child being happy at school or on being stretched and challenged to do their best.  At Barrow Hills, we believe that it is possible and desirable to realise both of these aims equally.

Strong pastoral care gives our children values of empathy, kindness and honesty and we believe that this directly supports the aims of our 'total education' approach whereby our children are encouraged and supported to take intellectual risks.  They become comfortable with being challenged and with working outside their comfort zone.  This is the best way that we know to enable a child to discover that there a few limits to what he or she can achieve.

We are proud of our children who leave us to go to top academic public and senior chools such as Charterhouse, Downside, The Royal Grammar School in Guildford, Guildford High School for Girls, St, Catherine's in Bramley and Tormead.  We are equally proud of the children who obtain Art, Drama, Music and Sport scholarships and go on to schools such as Cranleigh, Bryanston and Frensham Heights.

Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences theory provides a powerful secular analogy to our Catholic ethos and our belief that every child has strengths waiting to be discovered.  We are pleased that our ethos succeeds in attracting so many parents of non-Catholic children who want the very best for their children.
