Public benefitThe school is formally constituted as Barrow Hills Witley Limited, a charitable company limited by guarantee and registered as company 2534865. It is also a registered charity numbered 1000190. The objects of the charity, as set out in its Memorandum of Association, are: "To promote and provide for the advancement of education and, in connection therewith, to conduct, carry on, organise and develop in the United Kingdom any boarding or day school or schools for the education of children of either or both sexes of the Roman Catholic religion and such children of other denominations but so that each such school shall be carried on as an educational charity." The Charities Act 2006 brought about a requirement for charities, even if for the advancement of education, to demonstrate that their aims are for the public benefit. In order to comply with this requirement, the Governors have adopted a policy which is designed to ensure that access to our education is available to all, irrespective of their income or financial position. Accordingly, at any one time four children from families whose household income is considerably below the national average are given full bursaries. At present all four bursaries have been awarded to children who are midway through their careers at Barrow Hills. When one of these bursaries becomes available it will be advertised on the school web-site and in the local newspapers. In addition to this example of providing public benefit, the school maintains an active policy of raising funds and supporting Linden Lodge School for the Blind and St Benoît School in Burkina Faso, West Africa, thereby enabling many children to obtain an education that would otherwise be denied to them or be severely restricted. The school also allows its sports fields to be used free of charge at weekends by local children's football and cricket teams. |
