Art

Art flourishes at Barrow Hills and we are proud of our record of producing Art Scholars and original works of a very high standard.

The Art Department has its own dedicated and well-equipped department which is situated in what was the stable block.  Pupils are offered a wide range of materials and introduced to a variety of artistic techniques. These include painting, drawing, ceramics, textiles, sculpture, printing and film making.

The emphasis is on individual creative growth and all pupils are regarded as artists who should be encouraged to experiment and take creative risks.  It is important that children learn to perceive art as something more than just drawing and painting, and therefore strong emphasis is placed on learning to analyse and evaluate their own work and that of others.

In addition to the creative emphasis, pupils are helped to develop an awareness of the history of art and of contemporary art practice through regular gallery visits and working with visiting artists.

Pupils are also given the opportunity to display their own work in annual exhibitions for specific year groups, and examples of their work can be seen throughout the school.
